Paterson city officials recently wrapped up a public needs survey and a series of neighborhood meetings to hear what residents want most. The outcome: three clear priorities stand out that are now shaping upcoming projects and policies.
1. Infrastructure Upgrades & Storm Resilience
A frequent concern is failing sidelines—streets full of potholes, aging water mains, and flooding during heavy rain. Residents want visible repairs, better drainage, and transparency about when fixes will happen. City hall is responding with updates to its stormwater control regulations and plans to expand green infrastructure to manage runoff and improve water quality.
2. Housing and Economic Security
Affordable housing came up again and again, especially for low- and moderate-income households. People expressed worry about rising rents, lack of housing choices, and vacancy issues. At the same time, job security, support for small business owners, and more economic opportunity were top of mind—especially in areas that have been underserved.
3. Public Safety, Health & Community Spaces
Residents reported safety—not just from crime, but from environmental health risks—as a major priority. Noise, traffic safety, and walkability are concerns. Likewise, many asked for more green space, upkeep of parks, and access to recreational areas. Investment in lighting, parks maintenance, and safe routes for pedestrians also surfaced often.
What Comes Next?
The city’s next steps include integrating these priorities into its one-year action plan. Expect to see projects for housing rehab, infrastructure repair, stormwater projects, and safety improvements in neighborhoods soon. Community meetings will continue, and officials say resident feedback will guide funding decisions.
