Paterson, New Jersey, is actively engaging in environmental initiatives to enhance sustainability and community well-being. These efforts encompass park revitalization, youth-led climate action, and comprehensive environmental monitoring.
Quarry Lawn Park Reopens After EPA Cleanup
Quarry Lawn Park has reopened following extensive cleanup by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The former Allied Textile Printing site underwent remediation to address asbestos and lead contamination, ensuring a safe environment for residents. This collaboration between the EPA and the City of Paterson has restored a valuable community space along the Passaic River.
Youth Climate Action Fund Empowers Local Youth
The New Jersey Community Development Corporation (NJCDC), in partnership with Mayor Andre Sayegh and the City of Paterson, launched the Youth Climate Action Fund (YCAF). Funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies, YCAF empowers young residents aged 15-24 to design and implement climate solutions. Eight projects received $5,000 each to address environmental challenges, including recycling initiatives and community gardens.
Air Quality Monitoring in Paterson Schools
To assess air toxin exposure, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection collaborated with Rutgers University and Eastern Research Group (ERG) to conduct air sampling in Paterson. Monitoring stations were strategically placed, including at public schools, to measure potential exposures to children. This data aims to inform risk reduction strategies and improve community health.
Community Cleanups and Sustainability Efforts
Paterson’s Clean Communities program organizes community cleanup events, adopt-a-block programs, and public education efforts to combat litter and promote environmental stewardship. Additionally, the city is conducting a Stormwater Utility Feasibility Study to address flooding and improve water management. Public meetings are held to engage residents and gather feedback on these initiatives.
These collective efforts reflect Paterson’s commitment to environmental sustainability and community engagement, fostering a healthier and more resilient city for all residents.
